Before you go to bed

  1. Make sure that you have completed the night report on the HiPERCAM google site.

  2. Make sure that you have emailed all of the PIs with details of the data you obtained for them during the night. Please copy VSD into your emails. If appropriate, you should send light curve plots and reduce log files, a description of the observing conditions, and the total amount of time spent on the program.

  3. Make sure that you also email Antonio Cabreras (Head of Science Operations at the GTC) with a breakdown of the time spent on each program on the night. Please copy VSD into your email.

  4. Make sure that the comments in the hlogger observing log are up-to-date and complete for the night.

  5. Ensure that the instrument rotator is set to its safe position angle for HiPERCAM, as described in pumping and cooling. This can be done remotely by the telescope operator and ensures that there are no CCD heads pointing downwards, which reduces the risk of damage to the CCD heads by people working on the elevation platform during the day.

  6. Turn off the CCD clocks by hitting the Power off button on hdriver.

  7. Shut down the observing system by clicking the quit button at the top-left of hdriver, clicking File -> Exit at the top-left of the ESO NGC GUI (if open), and typing ctrl-c in the FileServer, HServer and GTCServer windows. However, do not close the HWServer window, otherwise the Grafana server showing the CCD pressures, temperatures and flow rates will not receive any data. Also, it is important to note that killing the FileServer will kill hlogger, so ensure you have dealt with item 4 above beforehand. Alternatively, you can type stop_hicam after closing hdriver, which will close the FileServer, HServer and GTCServer windows automatically, but will leave the HWServer window open. You can also stop individual processes in this way, e.g. stop_hicam hdriver, stop_hicam hwserver, or stop_hicam hwserver hdriver fileserver.

  8. Archive all data obtained during the night (see Archiving data).

  9. If you used anything in the HiPERCAM crates, ensure everything is put back and the crates tidied and lids closed.

  10. Tidy up the HiPERCAM area in the control room.

  11. Put the cat out.
